《110-2 SA》Land Ethics: Red Quinoa Harvest

Written by Teresa Chan

The Red Quinoa Harvest activity was held on the 23rd of February, 2022 in collaboration with the Student Association of International Programs and International Program Office. Last semester, students of the course IB520 Business Ethics and Social Responsibility planted red quinoa, a native Taiwanese species, neat the field of Sizihwan Art Gallery. As the crops matured, the students and professors harvested the crops. The event was organized with an aim to inculcate land ethics values among the students.

Profs. Chien-Yuan Sher, Yuh-Yuh Li, and Yi Lu, lecturers of the course Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, were also in attendance. Prof. Sher, Director of the International Program, delivered the opening remarks. He noted that while the actions we take now may not provide immediate results, they will pay off in the long run. Planting is analogous to learning; with proper care and attention, it thrives; similarly, the effort and time we put in studies will be valuable and yield rewarding outcomes.

Prof. Li demonstrated how to harvest the plant to encourage students to learn land ethics. Participants could gather all of the fruits they grew last semester with pairs of scissors. To collect red quinoa fruits, seventeen attendees were divided into three groups. Harvesting was completed in half an hour and after thal. The students were so happy to see that what they planted last semester had grown into full crops with beautiful leaves and whole fruits. The SA team had prepared healthy lunch boxes for all participants which was shared at the end of the event. The SA team's goal is to enrich students' lives while caring for each student's health.

"On the harvest day, it was astonishing to see how beautiful red quinoa is. Previously, I only ate red quinoa products, not knowing what they looked like. The power of nature is magnificent, and it inspires me that ‘As you sow, so shall you reap.’” (George Chang 張傑志, IBMBA 1st year student)

“This event inspired me a lot. As what Prof. Sher said, ‘planting is like studying; you will not see the results at first. With the endeavor devoted every day, we will see the fruitful results of our effort.’ I did not understand the purpose of planting red quinoa originally, yet I was willing to volunteer to water them. After three months, I saw the mature red quinoa fruit, and I realized that what I did paid off. Moreover, I also experience the superpower of nature. Once we respect and take good care of the land, it will reward us. Thanks to professors, the International Program office, and SA for organizing this event which moved me.”
(Angela Wu 吳含茵, IBMBA 1st year student)

Business ethics and social responsibility are critical for businesses. To succeed as a businessperson, we must learn to maximize earnings while also taking care of the environment and society. To accomplish Corporate Social Responsibility, academic knowledge alone is insufficient; we must exercise autonomously and learn via experience. The International Program's mandatory subject Business Ethics and Social Responsibility focuses on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethics.

In the CSR section, lecturers discuss concepts and case studies and allow students to develop a commercially viable global challenge that will also benefit stakeholders of students’ potential business. The fundamental concepts of ethics are discussed, but the emphasis is on land ethics or humans' moral responsibility to the natural world. Work ethics and cases that students may encounter in the future in the workplace.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: Student Association Organizes ‘Upcycle Contest’ To Encourage Creative Sustainability

In the world that we live in today, the importance of sustainable development goals (SDGs) cannot be stressed further. To instill the value of the SDGs set forth by the UN and to encourage sustainable living, the Student Association of International Programs organized the ‘Upcycle Contest’; participants had to reuse everyday materials and come up with the most creative item/artwork they can think of.

Judges for the competition included former Program Director Chien-Yuan Sher and Deputy Director Thijs Velema. The artwork/item was judged on creativity, originality, innovation, and effective use of reused materials. A 'popularity award' was also presented to the participant that received the highest amount of Facebook likes and shares for their creation. The winners weren't just handed a certificate but were awarded cash prizes of 2000, 1500, and 1000 NTD for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes, respectively. The popularity award was also offered 1000 NTD in cash.

The contest drew a huge response from NSYSU students. A total of nine teams competed in the contest:

Team #1: Mashi

Team #2: 627 by Cao Huynh Hong Phan, La Hanh Phuong and Ha Thi Xuan

Team #3: Indo-art by Keval Mehta and Sushila Kumawat

Team #4: HiHa by Tran Khanh Chi and Dang Phoung Thao

Team #5: Vision by Volha Sakhatskaya

Team #6: FRANCYCLE YOUNG MONEY A$$ by Francisco Huang

Team #7: LILAS by Bui Thi Thanh Nhan

Team #8: Ophiotaurus by Ysanne Chen

Team #9: YCP by Elsa and Tiara

After intense deliberation, the third prize went to Bui Thi Nhan (team: LILAS) from IBMBA. Showing off her creativity, she completely transformed an old jean pant into stunning home décor items. The second place was adjusted to team YCP consisting of Elsa from GHRM MBA and Tiara from ICAPS. Out of cardboard, newspapers, and other old household materials, they came up with a quirky candy dispenser.

Finally, and deservingly, the first place went to Ysanne Chen (team: Ophiotaurus) from IBMBA for her meticulously designed orca (killer whale) artwork. Seeing numerous bottle caps lying around, Ysanne was well aware that they can be an environmental hazard, and she decided to put them to good use and come up with a stunning piece of art. The popularity award was given to Tran Khanh Chi and Dang Phoung Thao (team: HiHA) from CLC and GHRM MBA, respectively.

GHRM MBA congratulates all the participants and winners for showcasing their talent and creativity and displaying their passion for creating a more sustainable world. In the future, GHRM MBA will continue to organize contests and events that not only encourages creativity and innovation but also addresses real-life problems.

GHRM MBA Students Score 3rd Prize At The 7th CSR Captain Program

1.jpg

At the recently concluded 7th CSR Captain Program, GHRM MBA and IBMBA students performed stupendously. Team "REMS" and "We Can Help" bagged the 2nd and 3rd prizes, respectively. Today, we share the experience of 3rd prize winners Mandy Chen, Michal Polacek, Cindy Ho, and Reianthong Vongsangkam, all 1st-year GHRM MBA students.

The 7th CSR Captain Program espouses students to promote the CSR program. Three companies that are currently investing in CSR were a core part of the competition. Each company got four teams to help solve their problem and provide recommendations and suggestions relating to CSR. This year, the goals were also in tune with the SDG's set in by the UN.

All the group members are currently taking Prof. Ryan Brading's Business Ethics and Social Responsibility Course. It was because of Prof. Ryan's encouragement that they decided to take part in the competition. Their group name was "We Can Help," which drew inspiration from "Taiwan Can help." True to their name, "We Can Help" stood out from the rest because they didn't merely come up with proposals and recommendations but emphasized the implementation.

We Can Help had to work with Domi-a company that strives to make the world more environmentally friendly. For their presentation, We Can Help focused on "Energy Poverty." Unlike other teams, the group members had to hold numerous rounds of interviews with the company to derive precise data and information. After collecting all the data and executing intensive research, the team members recommended marketing strategies to Domi.

Even though it was a whole month of intense competition, our students also made some invaluable memories. For Mandy, it was the first workshop in Taipei as they had to take the earliest HSR to Taipei, which was at 6 AM. Mandy recalls fond memories after the workshop when they went to a bar and shared each other's stories. According to Cindy, working as a team and learning to compromise and communicate was the most memorable moment. Reianthong shares that through the case studies of CSR presented at the competition, he gained invaluable knowledge.

It wasn't all easy for the We Can Help group members as they had to encounter various hurdles, but they persevered and eventually came through. As for the biggest challenge, Michal Shares:

"For me, it was getting the data from the company because in the competition, in the end, there were three companies. From the presentation, the two companies provided probably way more data than our company provided us. So, getting the data from our company was the biggest challenge. We had to call them many times, send emails, and have online meetings"

Despite all the hard work, We Can Help didn't expect to score a podium finish, so they were pleasantly surprised at the result. The group members particularly noted that it was their comprehensive report that impressed the judges. Mandy shares:"I think our presentation was great, but the other teams were stronger. I think it was our report that made us stand out. "

It wasn't all about the prize, but our students gained valuable knowledge from the competition, which will guide them in their future endeavors. For Mandy and Michal, discovering that one can make a living and do business and, at the same time, make the world a better place was the biggest lesson. For Reianthong, it was his first time participating in a competition, so the whole process was a great learning process. Cindy also notes that she's an introvert and is nervous with presentations, but she learned to overcome it through the competition.

They already have their hands full. For the entire December, they are going to work on marketing strategies for Domi. Not just that, they are also formulating marketing strategies for a Pharmacy who contacted Domi for assistance. As a note of thanks, We Can Help team members extend their gratitude to the International Programs Office, particularly Cindy and Scarlett, Prof. Ryan Brading, and their classmates for encouraging and helping them out throughout the entire competition.

Congratulations to Reianthong, Michal, Cindy, and Many for exceeding their expectations and performing brilliantly at the 7th CSR captain Program. This is just the start of many good things to come, and we are confident you will continue to bring laurels to the university.

Facta Non-Verba: NSYSU International Programs Take Action Towards A Better Environment Through Beach Cleaning Activity

Right now, the earth needs the younger generation to take care of it more than ever. #NSYSU is proud to have students who excel in both academics and extracurricular activities and take action to make the world a better place. On the 27th of November, the Student Association held "Cleaning The Beach And Dining” to raise #environmentalawareness.

More than 30 students took part in the event. The group met up at Gushan Ferry Dock and made their way to Cijin Beach. The participants enjoyed not only the beautiful scenery but also the time chatting with the other participants during the ten-minute drive. The Deputy Director of the International Programs, Prof. Frank Wong and Professors Ryan Brading, despite their busy schedule, attended the activity as well. Professor Frank Wong gave a short speech thanking the crowd and advised the students to be careful while cleaning. The President of SA, Joy, then talked about environmental awareness and announced the safety instructions.

The participants worked in groups and roamed all around the park and the beach, collecting trash and making the surrounding cleaner and healthier. Aurora Elsa, a 2nd-year GHRM MBA student, remarked that she always enjoys attending events organized by the SA, but this one was special as it was not just enjoyable but timely and relevant as well. Kudos to SA for holding another exciting event.

GHRM MBA And IBMBA Students Finishes 2nd At CSR Captain Program: Sam Lee Recalls Her Fond Memories

1.jpg

NSYSU GHRM MBA students have been winning competitions one after another this year, and they have done it once again. Sam Lee, GHRM MBA 2nd year student, finished 2nd at the prestigious CSR Captain Program along with her teammates Erica Liu and Rossie Lim, 1st-year IBMBA students, and Mashi Zhang, 2nd-year IBMBA student. Today, we share Sam's experience from the prestigious competition.

The competition offers students an opportunity to understand Taiwan's corporate culture while responding to global CSR movements. The competition involves the formulation of a team, including local and international students. The first prize winner of the "CTCI CSR Scholarship" receives NT$20,000, second prize winners receive NT$16,000, and the third prize winners receive NT$12,000.

Sam found out about the competition through GHRM Family and CTCIEF Facebook page's, and when she was asked by her friend Mashi to join her team, she gladly accepted. Sam's team was known as REMS, which not only stands for 'Responsibility and Enthusiasm Makes Sustainability' but is also an abbreviation of the first letter of each of the group members' names.

For their topic, Sam and her group members were assigned to help DiDi-a non-profit organization that aims to make the world a better place for the virtually impaired by assisting them in finding gainful employment. To help DiDi, Sam and her group did intensive research. She shares:

"We used SWOT analysis to understand more about the company, then choose one problem – customer retention to solve. We come up with the idea – creating more products to attract customers (because if customers join their events, they never join the next time), our ideas include games in the darks that customers can play together and understand their partners, or dining/tea in the dark which focus on enterprise, organizations,… to solve the problems in business, or understand more their employees,…"

Through the competition, Sam got to befriend amazing people who understood each other and were willing to work together. In the near future, she hopes to join more competitions with her REMS group members. It wasn't always easy for Sam and her group members, but whenever they were indecisive, they would hold a vote or ask the organization for guidance. In the end, they persevered and came through. Sam notes that teamwork, friendship, and learning to be open-minded towards others' ideas were the most valuable things she learned from the competition.

When the results were announced, it was a moment of bliss for Sam and her team, but they were also a little disappointed that they didn't win first prize. Sam shares her thoughts about finding out the results:

"That was so amazing because at that time I presented not well, but Rossie rocked it, she helped our team to finished our parts on time and delivered fulfilled messages to the judgement. We were really happy and a little disappointed because we were not lucky enough to win the first prize"

Sam is grateful for her team members and shares a short but meaningful message:"Thank you, my friends, 'cause you come to my life. I will always remember you guys. Save our days 28/11/2020"

We are beyond delighted that GHRM MBA and IBMBA students continuously bring prestige to the university by performing stupendously at competitions. Congratulations to Sam and her team, and we wish them only the best for their future endeavors.

Asia Pacific Youth Exchange Online And Global Innovation Idea Competition: GHRM MBA & IBMBA Students Triumphs!

Asia Pacific-1.jpg

Fresh off the victory at “Taiwan In My Eyes’ NSYSU students have done it once again and emerged victorious at the recently concluded Asia Pacific Youth Exchange Online And Global Innovation Idea Competition. Today, we reminisce about the competition with the first-place winner's Sam Lee and Leanne Shih, from the GHRM MBA program, Jasmine Chang and Keval Mehta from IBMBA, and the program co-ordinator Edward Tseng also from IBMBA.

For APYE Online And GSIIC, participants were requested to develop a business plan relating to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly relating to the issues created by Covid-19. The competition aims to empower the younger generation, raise awareness of timely issues and co-create youth-led and youth ideate development interventions. There were two parts of the competition: ideation and final pitching-our students got the first place in the final pitching stage of the competition.

Sam discovered about the competition through Facebook and decided to contact the rest of the members if they were interested in participating to which all the group members agreed. For Leanne, the opportunity to learn something new motivated her to participate, and Keval comments that since it was organized by the UN, the 'credibility,' as well as the bigger platform offered by the online mode of the competition, provided an impetus for participating. Sam also says that the certificate received through the competition will be valuable for her future. According to Jasmine, it was the opportunity to learn from different people that inspired her to compete.

With a catchy yet meaningful group name as "Greennovation," it’s no wonder our students caught the attention of the organizers. It was Leanne that came up with this quirky name. She shares:

"Since our program is related to some eco-friendly products and this competition asked us to give some innovative ideas, so I just combined these two words and came up with the name"

For the topic of their presentation, they had to focus on one or more SDGS’s out of 17. Greennovation members decided to concentrate on the timely and relevant SDGS of 'no poverty, 'decent work and economic growth,' 'industry, innovation and infrastructure,' 'sustainable cities and communities,' 'responsible consumption and production,' and 'climate action.' Our students provided meticulously researched solutions to the problem of excessive use of plastic shopping bags and improving self-reliance and localized production.

Throughout the entire run of the competition, the team members also forged some unforgettable memories. Sam reminisces that they would play some games after the presentation to relax and spend some time together, and she says, "it was a good time." For Leanne, it was the building of friendship and learning to work as a team that meant the most.

But it wasn’t all fun and games as our students encountered some challenges as well. Keval mentions that some of the other teams were already established and were already running social businesses and were much stronger than them. Greennovation members were in an ideation stage while some were already in an implementation stage. However, by some stroke of luck, the organizers decided to split the competition into an 'ideation' and 'implementation' part, and in the later, our students persevered and came out on top. Leanne also mentions that since the judges didn't like their idea initially, they worked harder and made their idea more reasonable and workable.

When they found out that they made it to the top 8, the team members were very surprised. In fact, they didn’t even know when the top 8 were announced, but when the list was displayed, they were enthralled, surprised, and happy to see their group name. After that, they had to quickly do the final presentation for about 5 minutes. After days of brainstorming, researching, dealing with setbacks, and formulating their ideas, Greennovation bagged the first place. Leanne described the moment as 'amazing.' What is even more amazing about their victory is that they weren’t just competing with groups from Taiwan. In fact, they went head to head with 40 highly accomplished groups representing 17 countries from the Asia Pacific region.

The group members also shared that it wasn’t the monetary prize that mattered but the learning and enriching experience. For Keval, it was the ‘skill development’ and learning to do an online presentation that he valued the most. Edward, who provided information and necessary support to the team, comments that the process of seeing team Greenovation’s project develop from a nascent to a full-fledged plan was the most valuable experience. He also encouraged the group members to make a small prototype of their social business.

From the competition, Jasmine also saw the positive side of humanity and was inspired as she shares:

"I learned that although life is hard and there are a lot of problems in the world, there are also a lot of people trying to make the world better. "

As of now, due to their busy schedules, the team members have decided to halt their project momentarily. In the future, they hope to bring their project to fruition and contribute to the SDGs.

From a small idea to dealing with setbacks and finally winning, NSYSU GHRM MBA & IBMBA students Sam, Leanne, Jasmine, and Keval have brought honor to the university. NSYSU GHRM MBA is immensely proud of their achievement and encourages all students to replicate their participative nature, hard work, and dedication.

2020-05-12_010118.jpg

IBMBA & GHRM MBA Students Association held the video contest called “Love nature” from March 19th to April 30th, 2020. The whole idea behind this event was to encourage students to think and care more about the environment. It is known that NSYSU is located on a magnificent territory surrounded by mountains and the ocean and full of unique fauna. Thus, it is very important to strike a balance between human and nature. Being an university with global vision, NSYSU is very environmentally friendly and, also,  is an active participant in the program Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where goal 15 is “Life on Land”. Therefore, IBMBA and GHRM MBA students in their videos shared their ideas on how to protect the unique nature and animals in the university, and also inspired others to think more about this global problem.

Three teams participated in the competition: “Gone with the Wind” team which included Le Ngoc Bich Thuy (李 珊)and Truong Lam Huong (張藍香), “Ocean Innovation” team with Tseng HuaYi(曾華翊)  and SU, LIANG-WEI(蘇良委), and “Tai-one in Nature” team with Justine Pura(傅佳璟). The participants were supposed to shoot the five minute videos that were published on the SA Facebook page. Next step was a voting period which lasted about a week. According to the rules, the video with the most amount of “likes” and “shares” would win.

Each team aims to bring important messages to us. The “Gone with the Wind” team aims to bring the message “give your hands to build it up as a better place for next students' generation” ;“Ocean Innovation” team emphasized the ocean waste issue risen dramatically. According to recent research, 80% Sea Area contains marine waste, 100% discovery rate of micro-plastic in 51 measuring point. It’s time to TAKE ACTION. Any single action can gather a lot of great idea to solve our social problem. “Ocean Innovation” team welcome all comments and encourage everyone to be part of ocean innovation challenge;  “Tai-one in Nature” team aims to attract everyone’s attention by its eye-catching video and remind us that it is our role as humans to love and protect our nature and to preserve plants and animals, and all assets of nature as we have been reminded since we were kids to conserve nature.

On April 30th, SA calculated likes and shares carefully then announced the result. “Tai-one in Nature” took the 1st prize, “Gone with the Wind” won the 2nd prize and “Ocean Innovation” got the 3d prize. Apart from that,  “Gone with the Wind” Le Ngoc Bich Thuy (李 珊)and Truong Lam Huong (張藍香) won a special Social Media Prize for getting the most amount of “views”. All videos are available at our SA Facebook page via this link: https://www.facebook.com/pg/SA.NSYSU.KAOHSIUNG/videos/?ref=page_internal

本次競賽獲獎名單:臺灣科技大學CHC Bubble Tea隊榮獲第一名;臺北大學鳶飛三角湧隊及成功大學JIGY隊榮獲第二、三名;優秀隊伍分別為中山大學Team SCR隊、交通大學VEGA隊、政治大學A Whole New World隊、淡江大學Lagom隊、淡江大學Voice for Justice隊、臺灣大學CWE(CROSS WORLD ENVISION)隊、臺灣科技大學Green Future隊、臺灣師範大學藍色多瑙河 Blue Danube。
